Choosing Acid-Free Paper for Decades of Entries

The journals we bind at Panel Grove Path use 90 gsm acid-free text paper with a slight cream tone. This choice is deliberate: standard office paper yellows within years, and ballpoint ink on acidic stock can fade or bleed through.

What acid-free means in practice

Acid-free paper is manufactured with a neutral or alkaline pH. It resists the brittleness that affects cheaper notebooks stored in humid climates — relevant in Incheon summers and unheated storage rooms.

We source paper rated for archival retention of at least fifty years under normal indoor conditions. That aligns with the time horizon many long-hold clients describe.

Ink compatibility

We recommend pigment-based ink pens for snapshot entries. Dye-based gel pens can feather on heavy paper and may not remain legible as long as pigment lines.

During setup sessions, we provide a recommended pen and demonstrate stroke pressure that avoids bleed-through on double-sided pages.

Page weight and binding stress

Heavier paper reduces show-through but adds bulk. At 90 gsm, a two-hundred-page journal remains manageable while supporting our standard double-sided snapshot layout.

When rebinding older journals, we sometimes encounter pages that were never meant for permanent records — receipt paper, hotel stationery, loose inserts. We flag these during assessment because they often require separate archival sleeves rather than rebinding as-is.

Care between sessions

Store journals flat or upright with adequate spine support. Avoid rubber bands, which crease covers and leave chemical residue on paper edges.
